First, I’ll be at KingCon 2015 in Kingston, Ontario, this Saturday (March 14 – Pi Day!) from 9:30 to 4:30 in the Wilson Room on the second floor of the Central Branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library. There are tons of events going on. I hope to see you there.
And second, Recently I purchased XCOM: The Board Game at Kingston Gaming Nexus. I painted the the soldiers with the colours I use in the computer game to differentiate the different specializations – white for snipers, yellow for heavy weapons, red for support, black for assault. I also modified a bunch of the heads, either building baseball caps/berets, or completely replacing the heads with heads from other miniatures, like US Marines and German SS heads from Warlord Games’ Bolt Action line. I also painted the tiny flags on their backs — three Canada, two USA, and one each of Brazil, Germany, China, Sweden, South Africa, France, and Belgium — representing a good multinational XCOM team.
I also tried to match the interceptors and UFOs to those in game. One of the photos has a nickle beside a UFO and an interceptor to give a sense of scale. Yes, they are pretty small.
As usual, I had to paint the miniatures before I could play the game. Now I can’t wait to try it. XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within is perhaps my favourite computer game of all time. It certainly has the most replayability of any game I’ve ever played. I’ve played dozens of game right through and I’ve currently got 83 of 85 achievements on Steam. The only two I don’t have are multiplayer achievements. Ironically, as huge a fan as I am of playing board games with friends, I’m not a fan of multiplayer video games. 🙂
